Bighorn Sheep Having Spring Lambs

Looking out our cabin window this time of year we witness a right of spring which unfolds on the mountainsides surrounding Indian Creek Guest Ranch. Big Horn SheepFemale Rocky Mountain Bighorn sheep, called ewes, congregate along the cliffs west of the ranch to have their young. The cliffs afford some protection from the larger predators like black bear, wolves and mountain lion as the ewes give birth to their lambs.

Twin lambs are common and occasionally triplets are seen. Although the steep hills provide some safety to the newborn lambs, golden eagles remain a threat to the newborns until they get too big for Idaho’s largest bird of prey.
