Steelhead Return to Indian Creek

Benefiting from high spring flows and excellent habitat, a large number of steelhead are migrating as far as 6 miles up Indian Creek to spawn. Spawning SteelheadJerry and Terry reported spawning pairs all along Indian Creek Guest Ranch in April and early May. The Shoshone-Bannock Tribes have placed hatch-out boxes on Indian Creek that utilize small man-made screen boxes holding approximately 15,000 steelhead eggs from local hatcheries.

The eggs develop into tiny fry and swim out of the boxes into the creek in 30 to 40 days. These young steelhead remain in the creek for 2 years and the majority of these (called parr) will migrate to the Pacific in 2008. After 1 to 3 years of growing large from feeding in the ocean they will begin their arduous 700 mile journey back to Indian Creek.
